Lending a Helping Hand

-Kristen Teel, Special Events Manager

Today I took a moment away from parade planning to pull weeds.

Time to get my hands dirty!

I joined the Rose Festival Court, City Commissioners Nick Fish and Amanda Fritz, and Rose Festival Foundation President Robert Hansen for a Day of Service with Rebuilding Together Portland, a wonderful nonprofit organization that helps those who--due to financial hardship, age, and/or disability--need help taking care of their homes.

People working together!

We met at the beautiful home of Opal Strong. For 50 years, Ms. Strong has lived in the neighborhood and watched many changes take place. A former community organizer, she helped plant many of trees that today line the streets of her neighborhood just off Rosa Parks Way. All of us were delighted to hear her stories as we devoured some pre-project lunch.

Stoking up before getting started

After fueling up for the afternoon, it was time to head out into the yard!

We donned work gloves, grabbed rakes, and picked up pruning shears; and together, we set about turning a somewhat scraggly yard into a beautifully weeded and trimmed oasis!

Many hands make light work

With more than 20 pairs of hands, the work went fast--and it wasn't long before we could see the fruits of our labors.

Voila! Before and After

All of us enjoyed putting our hands to the task of helping Ms. Strong, and learning more about Rebuilding Together Portland. I look forward to the "Day of Service" becoming an annual Rose Festival occurrence. Perhaps next time you'll join us!

The Rose Festival princesses certainly enjoyed being part of this program.
